Note on Probabilities
These are approximate drop rates for official Steam cases. Third-party sites like Hellcase may have different odds - always check the specific case details before opening. For a detailed breakdown of which cases give the best value, see our best CS2 cases tier list.
Wear Conditions & Float Values
Every skin has a float value between 0 and 1 that determines its wear condition. Lower float = less wear = better looking. The float is permanent and cannot be changed.
| Condition | Float Range |
|---|---|
| Factory New (FN) | 0.00 - 0.07 |
| Minimal Wear (MW) | 0.07 - 0.15 |
| Field-Tested (FT) | 0.15 - 0.38 |
| Well-Worn (WW) | 0.38 - 0.45 |
| Battle-Scarred (BS) | 0.45 - 1.00 |
Low Float Premium
Skins with very low floats (0.00x-0.01x) often command significant premiums. A 0.001 float AWP might be worth 2-3x a 0.05 float of the same skin.
High Float Collectors
Some collectors seek maximum wear (0.99x floats). These "max BS" skins can also be valuable to the right buyer, though the market is smaller.
Pattern IDs
Some skins have random patterns determined by a Pattern ID (1-1000). Certain patterns are extremely rare and valuable - sometimes worth 10-100x the standard price.
Case Hardened Patterns
The most famous pattern-dependent skins. Blue gem patterns (mostly blue) are extremely valuable. The #661 "Scar" pattern on AK-47 Case Hardened is worth $100,000+.
Fade Patterns
Fade skins have different percentages of color gradient. "Full Fade" (100%) patterns show all colors maximally and are worth more. Knives especially are graded by fade %.
Doppler Phases
Doppler knives and gloves have distinct phases with different color distributions. Ruby (all red), Sapphire (all blue), and Black Pearl are the rarest and most valuable.
StatTrak & Souvenir Skins
StatTrakโข
StatTrak weapons track and display your kills. They're ~10% of case drops and typically worth 2-4x the non-StatTrak version.
- โข Counter resets on trade
- โข Available for most weapons
- โข Orange text in name
Souvenir
Dropped during Major tournaments with special stickers commemorating the match. Cannot have StatTrak. Some are extremely rare.
- โข Gold stickers included
- โข From Major matches only
- โข Yellow border in inventory
Knives & Gloves
Knives and gloves are the most prestigious CS2 items. With ~0.26% drop rate, they're rare finds that can be worth anywhere from $60 to $100,000+. Looking to hunt for knives? See our best cases for knife drops.
Knife Types
19 different knife models including Karambit, Butterfly, M9 Bayonet, and more. Each has unique animations.
Glove Types
8 glove types: Sport, Driver, Hand Wraps, Moto, Specialist, Hydra, Broken Fang, and Operation.
Most Valuable
Factory New Sapphire/Ruby Dopplers, Blue Gem Case Hardened, and certain pattern combinations.
Knife Value Factors
Knife value depends on: type (Karambit usually highest), finish (Doppler phases, Fade %, Marble Fade pattern), float value (FN > MW > FT), and StatTrak. A vanilla knife might be $100 while a rare pattern on the same model is $50,000+.
How to Get Skins
Steam Market
Buy directly from Valve's official marketplace.
Case Opening Sites
Open cases on platforms like Hellcase for better odds.
Trading
Trade directly with other players for profit or specific items.
Third-Party Markets
Sites like Buff163, Skinport, or DMarket with lower fees.
Trading Basics
Essential Trading Knowledge
- 1. Know your prices. Use sites like CSFloat, Buff163, and Steam Market to understand item values before trading.
- 2. Inspect before trading. Always check float, pattern, and stickers. Use CSFloat or in-game inspect.
- 3. Never trade outside Steam. All legitimate trades happen through Steam's trade system. Anyone asking for PayPal first is a scammer.
- 4. Verify trade links. Scammers create fake profiles. Always double-check you're trading with the right person.
Common Scams to Avoid
- โข "I'll pay via PayPal after you send items" - Always a scam
- โข "Vote for my team" links - Phishing for your Steam login
- โข "Middleman" services - Legitimate trades don't need them
- โข Impersonators of streamers or traders - Check profile links
- โข "API scam" - Hijacks trades, use Steam Guard Mobile
Understanding Skin Value
Value Hierarchy
Most Expensive CS2 Skins
These legendary items represent the pinnacle of CS2 skin collecting. While most players will never own these, understanding what makes them valuable teaches important lessons about the market.
AK-47 | Case Hardened (Blue Gem #661)
The "Scar" pattern. Maximum blue coverage on the body. The most famous CS2 skin.
Karambit | Crimson Web FN
Extremely rare in Factory New. Clean webs with centered pattern add huge premiums.
AWP | Dragon Lore FN
Iconic Cobblestone Collection skin. Souvenir versions with good sticker placement command extreme premiums.
M4A4 | Howl FN
Contraband rarity (removed from cases due to copyright). Permanently limited supply makes it highly collectible.
Butterfly Knife | Sapphire FN
Butterfly + Sapphire Doppler = one of the most desirable knife combinations. Low float specimens sell for massive premiums.
Want to Start Collecting?
You do not need to spend thousands to enjoy CS2 skins. Many attractive skins cost $1-$20. The best way to build a collection affordably is through smart case opening on sites with good RTP, or by buying directly from third-party markets at discounted prices.
A Word About "Skin Investing"
You may see content creators or forum posts claiming that CS2 skins are "investments" that always go up in value. While some skins have appreciated significantly over time, treating skins as financial investments is risky for several reasons:
Market Manipulation
Skin markets are unregulated. Prices can be artificially inflated by coordinated buying or influencer promotion, then crash when the manipulation ends.
Game Dependency
Skin values depend on CS2 remaining popular. If player counts drop, a major exploit emerges, or Valve makes drastic changes, values can plummet overnight.
Liquidity Risk
High-value skins can be difficult to sell quickly at fair market value. Finding a buyer for a $10,000+ item can take weeks or require accepting a significant discount.
Account Risk
Your entire inventory can be lost to account compromises, trade scams, or Steam bans. Unlike a bank account, there is limited recourse if something goes wrong.
The healthiest approach: buy skins you enjoy using in-game at prices you can afford. If they happen to appreciate, that is a bonus -- not the goal. For entertainment-focused skin acquisition, case opening sites offer the most fun per dollar, while direct purchases from third-party markets offer the best prices.
